Episode Synopsis:

It's late November and a long time since the treasure hunt was over. Then Candy finds out from a vampire that Taresh Ghul is back in town and recruiting! In the face of doubt from Brian and Zak, Terrence the demon volunteers to prove himself by gathering some information, which he does, uncovering the pending arrival of two out-of-town experts in box opening - apparently Ghul still hasn't opened the treasure box.

Staking out the bus arrival, the group are surprised to find the experts are the Rope Vampires (last seen in season 2's Big Town. Zak, Candy and Brian head towards Taresh Ghul's hideout in the sewers, while Cynth and Cass head over to the music store and wait for developments. However, things at the music store take a turn for the worse when Taresh Ghul and his vampire minions arrive...

The box, apparently, can only be opened by a kiss between two people who have feelings for each other. As the vampires try and make their captives smooch, Augustus Langborn arrives with some demons in tow! Cynth tosses the box to Cass, who plants a kiss on Jack and causes the box to spring open. Making off with the Ashmedai Phylactery from inside, Cass and Jack are pursued by a shadow demon, while vampires and demons square off inside. Candy and Brian take on one of the big demons, Zak goes to rescue Cynth and finds she doesn't need rescuing, and Taresh Ghul comes face to face with Candy and Brian - where he meets his end.

Cynth drives off the shadow creature. Langborn, finally, comes for the treasure but Zak stands in his way. Langborn throws some bad magic mojo on Zak, sending him flying, but it provides an opening for Jack to drive his car into Langborn. Defeated, the powerful magician flees the scene. The Slayers East have the much sought-after phylactery in their hands!

Trivia and Notes:

  • With this ninth episode, season four becomes the longest individual season in Slayers East's run.
  • More major plot development, as the seasonal arc comes back into prominence and minor big bad Taresh Ghul bites the dust.
  • Fan-favourites the Rope vampires made a reappearance this episode, the same two Ropes from earlier episode Big Town. An earlier Rope vampire appeared in the final episode of Season One as a very minor character, but made such an impression a whole mythology was created around them.
  • A subplot linking Josh, from Baltimore, and the Rope vampires, also from Baltimore, was cut due to timing. In this subplot, Josh was going to use his knowledge of history to identify the Ropes and reveal how to defeat them. As it happened, they didn't need defeating - they were quite happy to be quiet observers of the whole affair and made a quiet departure at the end.
